How To Play National Lottery Scratchcards
First off, let’s start with the games you are most aware of – National Lottery scratchcards.
You can find these across the UK, sold in supermarkets, newsagents and a range of other high street shops.
National Lottery scratchcards come in a range of different prices, starting at £1 all the way up to £5. The games between these price range determine the style of the game as well as the odds and the top jackpot prize.
This is important because different scratchcards have different game styles and must be played in different ways. Let’s investigate some of the most popular game styles.
£1 Scratchcards
One of the most circulated scratchcard games is the £1 scratchcard game. They are typically the most simple.
The most popular is the ‘match 3’ style game, like the £150,000 Purple scratchcard.

In this game, you reveal the nine cash prizes in the main game area and match three to win that corresponding prize amount.
In other game styles, you need to match ‘your symbols’ with the ‘winning symbols’. An example of this is the Hot £50s scratchcard where if you match one or more symbols, you win the corresponding prizes.

£2 Scratchcards
£2 scratchcards are also simple games, but offer a different range of game styles, sometimes multiple on one scratchcard.
For example, in the Win All (2021) scratchcard, the game is played simply by matching ‘your symbols’ with ‘winning symbols’, as demonstrated below:

Another game style that is popular with £2 scratchcards, is the ‘match three symbols in a row’. In these scratchcards, there are multiple chances to reveal three symbols in a row; match three identical symbols in a row to win the corresponding prize.
This is demonstrated in the Red Hot 7s scratchcard below:

Finally, the last popular game style for £2 scratchcards is a game that features multiple games on one scratchcard, as demonstrated by £250,000 Black and Gold scratchcard:

On this scratchcard, there are four different games:
Reveal a winning symbol
Find a Bonus Symbol
Match three prizes to win
Although £2 scratchcards vary, they are often easy to understand by the on-card instructions.
£3 Scratchcards
The £3 scratchcards are most definitely the scratchcards that cause the most confusion amongst even the most seasoned scratchcard players. There are a couple of game types that cause the most issues:
Cash Lines Scratchcards
The latest Cash Lines game is the Christmas Lines scratchcard. In this game, you must reveal all the symbols from the ‘your symbols’ column, before you scratch off the corresponding symbols in both game grids. Once you match four symbols in a row or column, you win the corresponding prize!

Bingo Scratchcard
The Bingo-style scratchcards are very similar to Cash Lines scratchcards.
Reveal all of the numbers in the ‘Caller’s Card’ before you scratch off the corresponding numbers in the four cards. Reveal one of the four winning methods – in one or more card – to win the corresponding prize(s).
An example of the Bingo scratchcard, is the Frosty Bingo scratchcard, shown below:

Cashword Scratchcards
A typical example of the Cashword scratchcard is the Scrabble Cashword game. Just like the two examples above, instead of reveal numbers of symbols, you are revealing letters.

Scratch off the corresponding letters in the ‘word grid’ to reveal complete words. Reveal three or more words fully, to win the corresponding prize from the prize table.
£5 Scratchcards
£5 scratchcards typically feature game styles that have already been mentioned from scratchcards prized betwen £1 and £3.
These game typically utilise the ‘match the symbols’ style, but with more chances to play, just like the £500 Loaded scratchcard.
In other games such as £150,000 A Month For A Year scratchcard, there are additional games where you must match total two numbers to a certain number, or have ‘winning numbers’ that outscore ‘their numbers’, as demonstrated in the range of games below:

How To Play Online Scratchcards
With National Lottery scratchcards, the variety in games is fairly limited. Once you learn how to play a game, you can play future variations of the same cards.
However, whilst there are many benefits of online scratchcards, one of the benefits is the sheer variety of different games.
It is impossible to cover all of the different game styles available to play with online scratchcards, but fortunately, there is a solution to this.
Simply head over to the game provider of your choice, pick an online scratchcard, and look for the information/ help guides.
For example, we picked a game from one of our favourite online scratchcard sites – Lottomart. Once you click on the game, you can see detailed rules:

But the hardest part with most online scratchcard sites, is always the site you should pick to play at.
