There are three things that we recommended you do if you are trying to check your own scratchcard.

1. Read The Instructions

I know this is obvious, and we don’t want to be condescending, but they are the easiest way to solve your problem.

You can find instructions in three places – the front of the scratchcard, the reverse of the scratchcard AND via National Lottery’s official game rules.

It is also important to note that although scratchcards can look similar, don’t always assume that they have the same game rules as previous cards.

2. Contact National Lottery

You can contact National Lottery, and they will also offer you free advice.

3. Take It To A Shop

You can check any National Lottery scratchcard at any shop that sells National Lottery games.

Make sure that your scratchcard isn’t damaged, and that you have revealed the 4 digit winning code on the front of the scratchcard.

Any shopkeeper will be able to enter the information and pay out any winnings, or tell you there is no prize to be claimed. You can always ask for printed confirmation (via a pink slip).

If you don’t win, we always recommend asking for the scratchcard back in case you need a second opinion.

What Are The Reasons Why I’ve Not Won?

The most common reason that people need a scratch card checker is because they think they’ve won when they haven’t. There are a number of reasons for this.

You’ve Misunderstood the Rules

This is the most common reason, and is even common amongst seasoned National Lottery scratchcards.

There’s no need to be ashamed – it happens to all of us.

Your Scratchcard Has Expired

All scratchcards have an expiry date. After the expiry date has passed, you will not be able to claim any money – regardless of how much you’ve won.

All scratchcard games close once all scratchcards have been sold, or all jackpots have been claimed. After this date, no more scratchcards will be available to buy, and you get a period of ~180 days to claim any outstanding prizes.

If you think you have a winner, make sure to check it via one of the methods above as soon as possible – don’t leave it lying around collecting dust!

You’ve Damaged Your Scratchcard

If you think you’ve won on a scratchcard and go to cash it in, a shop may tell you they can’t pay it out and that you need to contact National Lottery.

This is usually because the scratchcard has been damaged in some way – a tear, it got wet, or you’ve folded it in the wrong place.

In this instance, the only way that you will be able to claim is by sending it to National Lottery directly. If you are going to do this, make sure to contact National Lottery before you send it, and make sure that you send it before the scratchcard expires too!
