Whilst at Scratchcard Winners, we have our own opinions on the best scratchcards to buy in the UK in 2020, we’re pretty sure each and every one of you reading this will have a different opinion to us.

Whilst there are many other ways you can make millions, there are only a few scratchcard jackpots that would make you a millionaire.

Therefore, we’ve split this article up into different categories of the best scratch cards to buy.

How National Lottery Scratchcard Odds Work

On the back of all National Lottery scratch cards, there is lots of information about rules and game procedure.

At the top of the scratchcard, underneath the range of prizes that can be won, displays a sentence. For example, on the back of the Diamond Riches scratch card, the full sentence is:

“OVERALL ODDS OF WINNING A PRIZE ARE APPROXIMATELY 1 IN 4.24”

reverse-image-of-scratchcard

These are the odds of winning any prize on this scratchcard.

To explain further, it means on average, if you were to buy 4.24 scratchcards, you win once.

However, this is the overall odds of winning on ALL the scratchcards of the same game in circulation. It does NOT mean you are guaranteed a win every 4.24 scratchcards!

So, now we’ve covered that, let’s get into it and rank the best National Lottery scratch cards.

Best National Lottery Scratch Card Odds

Before we start, we are going to make the general assumption that the scratch cards with the best odds of winning are the more expensive scratchcards.

Although this isn’t always the case, it makes it easier to compare 2020 National Lottery scratchcards.

For example, take the £1 £100,000 Purple scratchcard which has odds of winning any prize at 1 in 4.58, whereas the new £10 £4 Million Red scratchcard has odds of 1 in 3.19.

Because the cost of the £10 scratch card is higher, players are rewarded with better scratchcard odds compared to the £1 scratchcard.

Best National Lottery Scratchcard Card – Overall Odds

For this section, we are going to compare the overall odds of winning any prize on each of the below scratchcards.

£3 Scratchcards

£3 scratchcards provide a love/hate relationship with scratchcard players.

Whilst they provide more entertainment in terms of length of time to play, they can prove tricky to check if you’ve won. As we’ve seen many player issues, we’ve written about how to play the Cashword Bonus scratchcard, but there are also many other instances where players often don’t understand if they’ve won or not, so we suggest reading about scratchcard checkers if you are ever unsure.

Anyway, here’s the 3 scratchcards with the best overall winning odds:

  1. Triple Cashword Blue Scratchcard – 1 in 3.68
  2. Bingo Doubler Pink Scratchcard and Jewel Bingo Scratchcard – 1 in 3.72
  3. Gold Fever Scratchcard and Super 7’s Scratchcard – 1 in 3.74

£10 Scratchcards

The most expensive scratchcards in circulation, with the biggest prizes in the multi-millions.

Due to the National Lottery’s license with the Gambling Commission, only 2 £10 scratchcards are allowed in circulation at any time, unless a special license is granted. The overall odds therefore are:

Overall Odds Summary

Just because we’ve compared the overall odds, this does not make one better than the other and can be skewed by inidividual odds for different prizes. However, it does make a fairly simple starter comparison!

The results vary here due to 2 different sets special games; those with reduced jackpot prizes with more in circulation, and the new set of exclusive scratchcards:

Best National Lottery Scratchcard Card – Jackpot Odds

The results vary here due to 2 different sets special games; those with reduced jackpot prizes with more in circulation, and the new set of exclusive scratchcards:

£1 Scratchcards

The top 3 scratchcards with the best odds of winning the jackpot prize are:

  1. Happy Birthday Scratchcard – 1 in 481,464
  2. Top Dog Scratchcard – 1 in 1,425,195
  3. Cash Tripler Scratchcard – 1 in 2,351,520

And lastly, the £1 scratchcard with the worst overall jackpot odds is:
£100,000 Purple Scratchcard – 1 in 5,269,395

happy birthday scratchcard

Here we can see that the Happy Birthday scratchcard is by far the best odds of the top 3 scratchcards in this list. This may be something to do with it being a new exclusive scratchcard.

£2 Scratchcards

Again, the top 3 order changes compared to overall odds:

  1. Instant £100 Scratchcard – 1 in 1737*
  2. £100 Loaded Scratchcard – 1 in 1741*
  3. Lucky Stars Scratchcard – 1 in 1,795,932

The £2 scratchard with the worst jackpot winning odds is:
Triple Payout Scratchcard – 1 in 5,408,766

instant £100 scratchcard

We can see from this data, that the 2 scratchcards with the best odds are significantly lower than the worst overall odds, as well as the 3rd placed scratchcard. This is because there are significantly more jackpot prizes available (in the 1,000’s), but the jackpot prize is also significantly reduced.

£3 Scratchcards

The top 3 £3 jackpot winning odds ranks as:

  1. Win All Scratchcard – 1 in 290,196
  2. Cash Vault Scratchcard – 1 in 2,768,280
  3. Super 7’s Scratchcard – 1 in 3,384,280

The £3 scratchcard with the worst odds is:
Cashword Bonus Orange Scratchcard – 1 in 4,824,150

cash vault scratchcard

£5 Scratchcards

With the category with the most scratchcards, here’s the top 3 scratchcards in terms of winning odds:

  1. Full of £500’s Scratchcard – 1 in 1,769
  2. £20,000 Jackpot Scratchcard – 1 in 85,414
  3. Money Spinner £100K Scratchcard – 1 in 288,804

And the worst overall odds for the £5 scratchcard is:
20X Scratchcard – 1 in 4,325,390

full of £500s scratchcard

Interestingly, all 3 scratchcards in the top 3 best odds are ‘special’ scratchcards as mentioned before.

The Full of £500’s scratchcard and the £20,000 Jackpot scratchcard are both reduced jackpot prizes relative to the price, and the Money Spinner £100K scratchcard is a new exclusive scratchcard!

£10 Scratchcards

As mentioned previously, because there are only 2 £10 scratchcards, they rank as follows:

  1. Diamond 7’s Scratchcard – 1 in 2,405,850
  2. £4 Million Red Scratchcard – 1 in 4,019,759

Jackpot Odds Summary

As you can clearly see in the results above, the top 3 results for each scratchcard prize are different in this category compared to the overall odds of winning a jackpot prize.

The winners here are all ‘special’ scratchcards as mentioned earlier; they are either exclusive scratchcards, or they have a reduced jackpot prize structure to them.

Although there are different jackpot prizes for the scratchcards of the same price, unsurprisingly, the top jackpot prizes are dominated by the most expensive scratchcards.

Best Scratchcard to Buy for the Biggest jackpots

Yes, you can clearly choose the best scratchcard based on the odds above, but we don’t believe that tells the whole story.

You should be playing scratchcards for fun, with any prize being a bonus!

Never see scratchcards as a way of making money, as the odds are always stacked against you! The fun in taking part is that you enjoy playing the game, with a bit of a thrill from the potential of getting a bit more money than you started with.

We’ve played lots of scratchcards in our time, so we’ve chosen our best National Lottery scratchcard from each of the price points.

£1 Scratchcards

It’s no secret that we are not fans of the £1 scratchcards!

Don’t get us wrong, we think they are great for the casual player or as gifts to friends, but we don’t find them too exciting to play!

However, of all the gameplay, we quite like the Instant Lotto scratchcard as it is reminiscent of the actual National Lottery Lotto game. A £10,000 jackpot isn’t too bad either!

instant lotto scratchcard

£2 Scratchcards

The £2 scratchcard is our go to game if we are buying a scratchard to play on the go.

Although the £2 games are very similar in gameplay style, we are big fans of the new Double Match scratchcard that gives you two ways of winning – both by matching one or both of the winning numbers, or finding three identical cash amounts.

Double Match National Lottery Scratchcard February 2019

£3 Scratchcards

Ah, £3 scratchcards, the game that splits opinion.

We quite like that they take a while to play, but our favourite game play of choice has to be either the Cash Vault scratchcard or the Gold Fever scratchcard over the bingo or cashword games. Because we’ve already had some good wins on it and it is easy to find, we pick the Gold Fever Scratchcard as our favourite.

gold fever scratchcard

We’ve also got a good return on a video we did for our Scratchcard Winners youtube channel, that you can watch below!

£5 Scratchcards

Although there are 11 of them to pick from, we don’t really like many of them due to their simple game play structure.

However, we are quite fond of the Instant Millionaire scratchcard, as any game with a X2 symbol in it instantly makes things more interesting!

instant millionaire scratchcard

£10 Scratchcards

From the two available to pick, we are definitely picking the Diamond 7’s scratchcard.

This is simply because the £4 Million Red scratchcard is always the same as previous versions that have come in blue and black, and lack any change or creativity!

In Summary

To summarise this rather long article, we want to finish by saying that there is no such thing as a best National Lottery scratchcard to buy.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal opinion, and why you have chosen to pick the scratchcard, whether it be because you want to play the best odds, like the gameplay or you feel like a certain scratchcard is the lucky one on a certain day.

However, we must make a particular comment on the exclusive scratchcards featured in this article. Unless you have been told previously, there is no obvious way of knowing that exclusive scratchcards exist.

Because they are a lot harder to find than the regular set of scratchcards, it seems that a lot less of the general public are playing them. If you are playing for a jackpot prize – and not one of the £100, £500 or £20,000 reduced jackpots – these certainly seem like the way to go!
