Winning on a Scratchcard is a great feeling, but turning the winner into actual cash is even better.
Unfortunately, so many people get in contact with us asking if they can claim the money from expired scratchcard games because they’ve forgotten to cash them in.
Another query we get often is, “what time can you cash in scratchcards in the UK?”. Unfortunately, there is no ‘one size fits all’ answer here, let’s explain.
When do Lottery & Scratchcard Terminals Close?
To claim any Scratchcard prizes, players must go in store to a local shop or post office.
To validate your prize, they scan your ticket on the lottery terminal to find out what you’ve won.
Therefore, to claim a prize, you need to know what time a lottery terminal shuts.
But there are no set times around this.
It is often left up to shopkeepers fo determine when they turn on/off the lottery terminal based on when the shop opens/ shuts.
You will also find many instances where the terminal will be shut a lot earlier than they store closes. That is simply because the staff have shut it down, and nothing to do with any official rules!
So, When’s the Best Time?
In our experience, there are a couple of things to consider when you cash in a prize.
Firstly, go during the main hours at which the shop is open. Don’t go too early or late, or risk the terminal already being shut down for the day.
Secondly, go to larger stores – such as post offices or supermarkets. They are likely to have to have more staff and therefore less likely to shut the terminal so early.
All you need to do now, is make sure your scratchcard hasn’t expired!
