The Camelot Group – National Lottery’s owners – have announced record National Lottery sales for the 2020/ 2021 financial year.
Some highlights of the report include:
- Total sales exceeding £8 billion for the first time
- 4th consecutive year of rising sales
- £1.2 billion distributed to respond to COVID-19
- Over £5 million raised – per day – for Good Causes
How Did Scratchcards Do?
Typically, scratchcards have been one of National Lottery’s best performing products alongside their online equivalent – Instant Wins.
However, due to reduced footfall caused by multiple lockdowns in the UK, scratchcard sales were down. This was offset by an increase in online Instant Win games, with both games totalling £3,683.2 million. Since the financial year end (April 2021), retail footfall has returned to pre-pandemic levels, which will likely see a return to form for total scratchcard sales.
The average digital weekly spend remained flat, but all digital customers averaged less than two online Instant Win games played per person, per week.
This was also in part due to an increase in online registrations at National Lottery, with 2.7 million new online registrations.
Time to Consider Online Scratchcards?
Although National Lottery scratchcards sales are likely to return to form, there is no doubt that the availability of online scratchcards continues to grow.
